Purchase was in April. After over a month of back-and-forth emails and numerous calls to Paris (which is not easy from the US), Sotheby's still has yet to refund my VAT despite providing customs and export documents. Any foreign bidder should consider this additional cost before bidding as the Paris location is not customer service friendly and not willing to refund your VAT. This was part of a multi-auction house shipment and Christie's refunded the VAT immediately with the same documents as was expected. They requested trivial changes to customs documents after the fact, like: \SOTHEBYS FRANC\ which was spelled as such due to character constraint limits on the form was considered as not being sufficient and they wanted it unabbreviated. They also wanted a physical ink stamp present on a form that is electronically/digitally generated. After a few calls and much waiting, I was advised by DHL that such a stamp does not exist for that document due to it being electronic. So much hassle and hoops to jump through... I really expected better service from a company that performs so well in its other locations. Purchases from Hong Kong, London, & New York have always been flawless with impeccable service. I recommend those locations.
