Beautiful Commonwealth war cemetery, calm and tranquil, surrounded by farmland deep in the countryside. The cemetery is unusual in two ways. Firstly, it is below ground level, lying in an old chalk pit. Secondly, it's an ellipse shape. It's very, very different to most other Commonwealth cemeteries. The Queen Mother's brother Fergus Bowes-Lyon is buried here. Difficult to find unless you know it's there. Quarry Cemetery is situated about 50m down an unpaved track off a minor road between Vermelles and Auchy-les-mines. The cemetery is barely visible from the road but is signposted at the start of the track.

A tranquil place, its hard to image it was once next to the British trenches and only 500m from the German. Unfortunately it suffered from shelling, so many of the headstones bear the heading \Buried Near This Spot\ - including my relative Alfred Bale. Its existence is mainly due to the fighting at Fosse 8 and the Hohenzollern Redoubt between July 1915 and June 1916. In August 2012 a headstone was installed to commemorate Capt. Fergus Bowes-Lyon.

Beautiful little war cemetery situated in a small quarry. The late Queen Mother's brother, Captain Fergus Bowes-Lyon, is one of the burials here, being registered as missing for many years. There are also a good number of dismounted cavalrymen buried here. This quarry was immediately behind the British front lines during the Battle of Loos in September 1915. It was directly opposite the Hohenzollern Redoubt, a formidable German strongpoint. British forces used poison gas for the first time, although many British troops were gassed themselves. The attack was initially successful, but strong German counter attacks soon pushed the British back to their original lines.
