What a stunning temple in the middle of a small but significant square in the very heart of this beautiful city of Vienne! I'm actually in an apartment in this square overlooking this historic monument! The first thing that strikes me is its reminiscent of the pantheon of Rome with four sides, Corinthian columns. Six on the front entrance with five on the giant porticos on the north and south sides. The west side is walled off. There's a cellar installed in the middle of the temple housed the statue of Augustus and his wife Livia. This is true Roman temple built on a podium and speculative dates of construction going back to 20-10 BC.AD. It's possible to book with the Tourist Information office to explore this temple as it's fenced and locked but you can easily walk around it and marvel at this spectacular ancient monument. Absolutely worth exploring as it's about a couple of minutes walk from Gare de Vienne. There's street parking but not worth driving to the square. Young children will absolutely love it and all ages.

This magnificent Temple was built in the first century BC, apparently due to a fire or an earthquake, the front part had to be reconstructed about a century later... After the fall of the Roman empire, Christianity invaded the Gaul, fortunately they didn't destroyed this \impure\ temple, but they readapted it as a church; thanks to that, we can enjoy this beautiful jewel, on a very original state.

Roman historical building that survived the fall of the Roman empire , the rise of Christianity Renaissance, Reformation and the French Revolution in a number of guises from temple, church , library and returned to its status of a Roman temple. This stands next to a wonderfully modern sculpture of the Yoplait Cow

The temple and the tower behind it ( a jail) Is fascinating. The Saturday market about a block away is a cook’s dream. I was so lucky to spend that Saturday in late September 2017 there.

This 2000 year old temple dedicated to Roman emperor Augustus and his wife, Livia, became a Christian church, then returned to its original look overtime.
