Great place to visit. Well thought out museum that gives a very good insight into the Roman occupation of Gaul and the battle of Alésia. The displays are very informative. Don't miss the reconstructed fortifications outside the museum. The museum boasts a small restaurant where you can have a spot of lunch. There is an information package for teachers.

In the Battle of Alesia (September, 52 BC), Caesar built a fortification around the city to besiege it. However, Caesar's army was surrounded by the rest of Gaul, and Vercingetorix had summoned his Gallic allies to attack the besieging Romans, so Caesar built another outer fortification against the expected relief armies. The relief came in insufficient numbers: estimates range from 80,000 to 250,000 soldiers. Vercingetorix, the tactical leader, was cut off from them on the inside, and without his guidance the attacks were initially unsuccessful. However, the attacks did reveal a weak point in the fortifications and the combined forces on the inside and the outside almost made a breakthrough. Only when Caesar personally led the last reserves into battle did he finally manage to prevail. This was a decisive battle in the creation of the Roman Empire.

Extremely well (and detailed: take your time) explained battle of Alesia. Beautiful architecture. The play outside in the roman camp is interesting, although a little overacted.

Nice exposition! Suggest to attend the theatre (2nd floor) and movie on Vercingetorix-vs-Caesar (1st floor) before starting your tour. Top of the immersion by visiting the Roman village outside of the museum. No need for audio-guides if you are willing to read brief plaques.

Very nice museum - I liked the way they provide a lot of context around the battle and how experts put it in perspective in live Q&A sessions. Well done!

Fascinating place. Went with our 3 kids (ages 15, 12 & 9) took the English guidephone and we were all in the stories told. Although we missed the Roman presentation (arrived too late) we still spent two hours in. Highly recommended.
