If you like fortifications as much as me then this is the place for you. The fort originates from the 16th century, and was built on the heights above the harbour of Antibes by way of protection. Vauban redesigned the whole structure later in the 17th century, so that the fort is now a perfect example of defence against artillery, with its star-shaped design, bastions and ramparts

It is a nice pleasant climb up to Le Fort Carré. Once you get to the top you can take really nice pictures, as you can see up to the end of the coast. There is a tour that tells you about the different areas of the Fort, as well as bi-lingual guides who make it accessible to anyone!

Fort Carré is a lovely place to visit, full of history and a rare example of a fully formed star fort, that hasn't crumbled to the elements. The views from the ramparts is fantastic, and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Well worth a visit

The Fort is an impressive historical monument. However, the road to get there can be very difficult, because you can't reach it if not walking and in the summer the sun can be very hot. The view is breathtaking though.
