Château de Rouffillac is a truly magical fairytale castle overlooking the Dordogne in a vast area of private grounds. There is an enchanting walk to the quaint and charming Carlux. There's an ancient castle where they stage events, various little shops, a bar and a restaurant with a store selling local produce. There are various ruins in the private woods harking back to the times of the Hundred Years' War with lookouts towards where the battles were taking place. This is echoed within the reception rooms inside the house with fleur-de-lis and English lions depicted to reflect this. I cannot say enough about how incredibly friendly and welcoming the owners are. They have captured and retained the history whilst transforming this beautiful residence into a dream destination. What a splendid setting for a wedding, birthday or an ultra luxurious holiday with a special group of friends. It is impossible to convey in photographs the breathtaking place they have created! The finely embroidered gowns, towels, pillowcases and even aprons are beautiful and each bedroom has been furnished to a different theme. The attention to detail in every part of the house and surroundings is utterly stunning and beyond anyone's imagination.

Luxury these days is ostentatious and expensive. If you are bored of gimmicks, the look at me photos, and shows of flamboyance and want to return to a time when it meant doing something rare, something magical and getting great pleasure then this is it. As a workaholic, I was only meant to stay a few days but I cancelled my trip to Rome without any sense of guilt. You know when something is special. The grandness of the chateau hits you as you drive through woods to its door. It is a huge palace but when you walk into the kitchen you instantly feel at ease, a sense of calm and belonging as if you have always lived here. The vastness means you can go hide but also easily fall into one of many rooms to join in the chatter and the laughter; the odd glass in hand. The ambience makes you appreciate spending time with friends and loved ones. This is not an escape. It is a return to reality. To nature, to walks in the woods, to scrabbling up steep hilly banks to find Roman ruins. An adult returning to childhood freedom. Losing yourself into another world. All the bedrooms have their own individual character. I slept in the Venetian Room. I know nice sheets but these were really nice sheets. I slid into sleep every night. Everything is top quality but you don’t need an engineering degree to turn on the shower. It is so pleasantly gadget free. Let’s face it, every luxury hotel, every luxury spa, every special Swedish cream; it’s all the same bought from the same store, boring and instantly forgettable. But this is simplicity, beauty and elegance. The experience and memories will stay with you.
We were so lucky to stay for a few days at Chateau de Rouffillac as part of a group from London. The refurbishment which has taken place this year is absolutely incredible. The interior has been upgraded to a level which is world class. The attention to detail is stunning - monogrammed towels, sheets, dressing gowns etc.. For the owners, who couldn't have been more charming and welcoming, Rouffillac has been a labour of love and it is now truly exceptional. Its position sitting on a cliff overlooking the Dordogne doesn't hurt either. We cannot wait to go back next summer. To Kirk and Cassandra - thank you..
Words cannot describe the beauty and majesty of Chateau de Rouffillac. From the bedrooms there is a spectacular view of the Dordogne river and the region dotted with lovely villages, the grounds are impeccably maintained with trees, flowers and an outdoor pool. The kitchen is massive and well-equipped for cooking elaborate meals. And the terrace is perfect for a celebratory dinner overlooking the valley. Our stay was unforgettable
Chateau de Rouffillac is simply incredible in every possible way! The owners have restored this stunning historic castle to it's full glory sympathetically and yet including every high end mod con, from the top of the range cooker in the kitchen, to the copper roll top bath (that I have been coveting myself for some time!) - every bathroom is equisite (most of them set in their own round tower) The multiple rooms include a stone vaulted kitchen breakfast room, a dining room fit for The Knights of the Templar, multiple reception rooms including a huge library room and at least 10 bedroom suites that are ALL exquisite! I stayed in the Royal Suite with the bedroom in a tower with stone mullion windows and the original stained glass tacked onto the stone and I felt like a true Princess, waking up to view over her vast lands! The setting is just extraordinary, the front facade and terrace command a breathtaking view over the valley down the river with virtually a 270 degree panoramic view that keeps your entertained for hours. The surrounding woodland, flora and fauna are so lush that it creates a morning mist that is so beautiful that you think you have been teleported to a fairytale enchanted castle. The owners, who are as equally as enchanting, went out of their way to look after with a level of kindness and professionalism that is second to none. I can't wait to hopefully return and if you are thinking of booking....look NO further!!
Beautiful place.
Our family rented out the castle for a week and the owner and staff were amazing. The grounds were well kept and the pool, field and games rooms kept the kids busy. The kids could have kept busy for weeks. The surrounding area had enough history and activities for everyone. Great find! Be sure to hire Nanu to cook the dinners!
Did a wedding and party at the castle is was fantastic, beautiful rooms, pool, terrace, nice nature around it
