An artisan chocolatier with a breathtaking array of detailed sculptures made in various types of chocolate. It is a very small space, though; standing room for probably no more than 10 people! When my husband and I entered the shop, the charming shopkeeper greeted us with a warm “bonjour!” and inquired courteously if we were just looking or ready to order. He humbly apologized for not being able to speak much English, but made an earnest effort to communicate with us and the other tourists who happened to be in the shop besides us. Each piece of chocolate was an artwork in itself, including the caramels and truffles and such in the counter display. The shelves as well were filled with tiny chocolate sculptures with incredible detail that could fit in the palm of one’s hand. Since the shelf displays are open, however, there are very clear signs in both French and English that say “Please do not touch!” My husband and I only bought a bar of chocolate with candied hazelnuts and a little bag of chocolate-covered candied ginger, but there are a couple of particular specialties JC Rochoux offers that I want to highlight as well, and these are the cacao essence/syrup and the chocolate carousels. The cacao syrup, as far as I understood from the shopkeeper’s explanation, has a rich sweetness suitable to stir into all sorts of food and drink, such as tea, coffee, or even pancakes. The chocolate carousels are fun little creations, comprised of a simple but sharp vertical blade with a handle that freely rotates around a center spike to hold a small wheel of chocolate, so that as one turns the handle, the blade shaves the chocolate into thin curls. Definitely check out this amazing chocolatier! The passion for both the art and craft involved in the chocolate is clearly, almost palpably, evident, and even the aroma of chocolate in the air within the store is like a breath of, as the French put it, the joy of life.
