Sallaumines, France

Lens-Sallaumines German Military Cemeterywas started during the German occupation of Lens during the Great War as an extension to Lens-Eastern Communal Cemetery. It was greatly expanded when burials from smaller cemeteries where concentrated here at the end of the war. Today, it contains more than 15,000 burials, about half of them in communal graves at the rear of the cemetery with the rest identified by stone crosses throughout across the large undulating lawn. As with all german military cemeteries, there are many trees planted throughout the cemetery. The rear of the cemetery is bordered with a high wall made up large individual slabs of stone. It's a beautiful place, with the green lawn constrasting greatly with the gravelled French communal cemetery which you need to walk through to gain access. There are a couple of large memorials, one inside the cemetery and and one outside just to the left of the entrance gate. Immediately before the entrance to the German cemetery is a small Anglo/French military plot holding 80-100 graves, 30 of them British.
