Quiet and not too crowded museum. The venue is more interesting than the paintings themselves. But it is my personal opinion. This workshop-type house has French ceiling and old wooden staircases which create a home-like atmosphere. A peculiar spot in Paris.

The Muséum national Jean-Jacques Henner is an art museum dedicated to the works of painter Jean-Jacques Henner (1829–1905), and located in the 17th arrondissement at 43, avenue de Villiers, Paris, France. The museum in housed within an 1878 mansion, formerly owned by the painter Guillaume Dubufe, acquired by Henner's niece in 1921. It was inaugurated as a museum in 1924, and became a national museum in 1943. Today the museum contains a large collection of paintings and drawings by Alsatian painter Jean-Jacques Henner, including some 1,000 sketches, documents, and souvenirs distributed in seven rooms on four floors of exhibition space. The collection includes more than 130 portraits, as well as mythical themes and figures in dream landscapes that approached Symbolism. Many studies are displayed with finished paintings, together with descriptions by major critics of the day.

It's a small museum, but very interesting to see Jacques Henner's work. Besides his iconic work of red headed women the painting and drawings of his travels are very good and give a unique look into places of the past. The museum itself has been owned by artists, so it is easy to imagine what it was like for a successful artist to live and paint in this private mansion. Easily you can pass an hour of enjoyment here.

The museum reopened after a long period of renovation. The paintings and sketches of Henner are exquisite. While the museum space is small and the number of works displayed is relatively limited, there is a special atmosphere about this museum that lets you travel in time as if you were living in the "atelier" of Henner and watching him creating these paintings. The museum has also a rich cultural agenda of events that complements these wonderful paintings.

This artist was considered one of the top impressionists of his day - but is now almost unknown. This house museum is interesting, but also reveals why his fame didn't last. Worth it if you're in the area, but not a top Paris highlight.
