Located in the intra muros district of St. Malo, the northwestern port city in France’s Brittany region, Moka Malo is a coffee lover’s dream: a quaint cafe offering organic, single-origin, high altitude speciality coffee, artisanally roasted in the shop by the friendly master craftsman pulling triple duty as owner-roaster-barista. The cafe itself is compact - no more than 300 square feet - and is refreshingly unpretentious. Lime green walls are covered with art, including a framed write-up of the moka malo roasting philosophy and process, as well as descriptions of the coffees themselves: tasting notes, the coffee plant varieties (or cultivars or hybrids, if you want to get technical), and the name and location of the farm or cooperative where the beans are grown and harvested. The other cafe walls are covered with bags of beans and teas for sale, old burlap sacks that once contained green coffee, and vintage coffee equipment like vacuum pots, siphons, mechanical and hand grinders, and even a rusty small batch roaster. This decor conjures the sense that you’re sitting in the comfortable and well-worn living room of an artisan who has been plying his craft for years. The owner was happy to chat with me about where his green beans come from (a green coffee importer) and why he thinks hipster coffee purveyors who claim they source and roast beans themselves are full of it. He doesn’t have time, money or desire to increase his carbon footprint by traveling to source beans himself. Besides, he said that requires a completely different skill set, and he likes roasting and selling coffee in his shop just fine. His coffee knowledge and forthright opinions made for a lively conversation. While we talked he made me a french press brew of Ethiopia Sidamo that had a smooth, medium body with tasting notes of citrus and pepper. I was truly happy to stumble upon this gem of a cafe for a delicious cup of coffee while exploring the ancient streets of St. Malo.

Excellent organic coffee roaster! Offers French press and espresso perfectly executed and coffee beans for takeaway.
Great coffees very friendly and charming shop
