The castle is often referred to as le château du roi René (King René's castle). Replaced a fortress, built on the site of the Roman town to monitor the border of Provence. After the destruction perpetrated in 1399 by the bands of Raymond de Turenne, the Anjou family decided to rebuild it entirely. It was turned into a military prison in the 17th century, until its acquisition by the state in 1932.

Interesting place but could do with some more language translations on the exhibits. Particularly for us ignorant English!

A mighty castle, exactly what you picture when you think of a castle. The centuries old cannonball holes are just amazing

Beautiful piece of history and a peek into the end of the Middle Ages. The chateau is completely in tact and just stunning to see. The sheer size of it is impressive let alone the fact it is still standing today. You can visit nearly every room and are able to go onto the roof top to see the surrounding area and the massive Rhone river. The rooms no longer have furniture but the place leaves you in awe nonetheless. You can also visit the small garden that is situated in an interior courtyard. There is also a few rooms with artifacts. Do not miss seeing this chateau/fort especially if you love history and historical monuments.

A very picturesque medieval castle. Used throughout history as a prison, is well known for the graffiti left by British soldiers and other prisoners from different ages. A fantastic place to visit.

This is an interesting place to visit. In addition to old wall paintings it always seems to have some eclectic exhibits on show. The last time we visited there was a decapitated Mickey Mouse, this year they had Victorian \curiosity boxes\ on display. There are many steps to climb to reach the roof terrace, but it is well worth the effort for the view you get over the Rhone valley
