Lovely place to visit. The fort is a wonderful surprise on your road towards the Mediterranean sea. It is part of an old fortification system, along with Mont Louis and we totally enjoyed and we will come back for sure.

Despite the fact that most shops are closed, the tour was very worth it!

Very touristy but has its character. The historical walls are cool, the upper fortress is accessible for an entry fee. A few good cafés, places to eat, otherwise tourism driven shops. Public toilets close to the tourist information office are in a shocking state.

Gorgeous little walled village with high walls all around it - you can't miss it if driving along the N116. Parking along the main road was free on Sunday and there is also lots of parking on the western and eastern side of the village outside the walls. Toilets on both sides seem to be out of order though! The village was very quiet on a Sunday afternoon in December but it was still lovely to walk through it and go up to the train station. The dramatic landscape of mountains beyond the walls adds to the charm. I do imagine it could be a tourist hotspot in busier times of the year though seeing the closed souvenir shops and hotels.

Great fortress & example of period defensive walls, but the town is a bit delapiddate. Do stop and wander though. Free parking outside the walls and they allow overnight camping cars.

This is a must visit place for anyone visiting the area. The yellow train leaves from here but be careful when booking as the older open top train isn't guaranteed

What an incredible find! We went here in search of a potier whose works were no longer being sold in Collioure, where we have an apartment for a month. I had no idea that this was a walled village full of many artisan shops and restaurants. The pottery in the picture is but one of many shelves with many varieties of vessels. These are made in the traditional Catalan fashion, lead-free, useful from freezing to boiling to microwave, and beautiful. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

While you won't learn a great deal about the history of Vauban (unless you speak Catalan or French) or Villefranche (even if you do) the circuit of the walls is a great warren of a place through which you can wander letting your imagination fill in the gaps. At 4.50 an adult it's pretty good value, and our daughter loved it.
